The South SoHo Map (SoSo)
Being the southernmost gallery on the SoHo map had its advantages, but foot traffic and walk-in business wasn't one of them. Especially on weekends, when walking around the rest of the neighborhood felt like taking the uptown IRT, Greene Street was downright bucolic.
Towards the end of our third year, I proposed a loose alliance among the other southern galleries to create "Art After Dark in SoSo," or South SoHo, where we'd all stay open late on Wednesdays to try and make the area a destination and encourage walking tours gallery to gallery, not unlike what has sprung up naturally in Chelsea over the years. I threw together a map and proposal and went door to door only to be told that something similar had been tried on a smaller scale a few years before, to minimal effect, and thus few were willing to get involved and trust that the timing had changed for the better. That, and the fact that the area galleries were spread so thin at the time quickly put an end to the idea. |
